WHITNEY ART PARTY
THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2009 6:00 P.M.

Max and Lubov Azria turn to art as inspiration whenever creating a new collection. Seeing fashion as yet another art medium capable of expressing individuality and ideas, the Azrias believe in the importance of encouraging artistic expression in all its forms. In this spirit, the Azrias have partnered with the Whitney Museum of American Art since 2007 to host its annual Art Party in benefit of the Museum's Independent Study Program (ISP) and other educational initiatives.

The yearly event highlights the Whitney's commitment to supporting and encouraging the most promising and influential American artists, and creates an opportunity for artists of all mediums, including film and fashion, to connect with and show their appreciation for one another.

This year’s Whitney Art Party also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the BCBGMAXAZRIA brand and Max Azria’s unique combination of European sophistication with the American spirit that has won over countless women around the world. “My husband and I are thrilled to be partnering again with the Whitney Contemporaries to raise funds for the Whitney’s Independent Study Program,” said Lubov Azria, Creative Director of BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP. “Our biggest passion in life is creativity so it is a blessing to be able to support the art community and help give these inspiring individuals a voice."

The Azrias co-hosted with Kate Bosworth the 2007 Whitney Art Party in celebration of the Museum's exhibit, "Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era." The event featured a live psychedelic light show by Joshua Light Show, who created similar shows in the '60s for legends Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead, among others.

Inspiration for the 2008 Art Party was found in the iconic "bandage dress" style of the Hervé Léger by Max Azria collection. In addition to sponsoring and co-hosting the Art Party with Rachel Bilson, Max and Lubov Azria collaborated with artist E.V. Day on a stunning piece called "Bondage/Bandage" created from a deconstructed Hervé Léger by Max Azria bandage dress.

This year, Max and Lubov Azria were pleased to continue their support for the Whitney by partnering with them for the 2009 party, co-hosted with Camilla Belle. Artist Mark Fox partnered with BCBGMAXAZRIA to create the limited edition black and white umbrella lined with words of inspiration from Whitney Museum founder Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney: "It is especially in times like these that we need to look to the spiritual. In art we find it." Max and Lubov look forward to continuing their support for the Museum, its educational programs and contemporary American art on all levels.

Home to one of the world's foremost collections of twentieth and twenty-first century American art, the Whitney Museum was founded in 1931 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, whose personal collection made up the majority of the Museum's original holdings. Today the permanent collection includes nearly 20,000 paintings, sculptures, multimedia installations, drawings, prints and photographs by some of the most original, influential and celebrated American artists.
